FENTANYL TRANSDERMAL

Warning

Risk of addiction, abuse, and misuse, as well as respiratory depression, especially when used in combination with other CNS depressants

Contraindications

• Patients who are not opioid-tolerant
• Acute or intermittent pain
• Postoperative pain
• Mild pain
• Significant respiratory depression
• Acute or severe bronchial asthma
• Known or suspected gastrointestinal obstruction

Adverse Reactions

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Somnolence
• Dizziness
• Insomnia
• Constipation
• Hyperhidrosis
• Fatigue
• Feeling cold
• Anorexia
• Headache
• Diarrhea

General Guidance

Dose adjustments should be made based on the patient's response to the medication and their prior opioid usage

Pregnancy

• Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
• Neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome may occur

Nursing Mothers

• Fentanyl is excreted in breast milk; use with caution

Pediatric Use

• Not recommended for pediatric patients under 2 years of age
• Use with caution in pediatric patients 2-18 years of age

Geriatric Use

• Use with caution in geriatric patients
• Dose adjustments may be necessary due to decreased hepatic and renal function
