Contraindications

  • All children younger than 6 years of age
  • Significant respiratory depression
  • Acute or severe bronchial asthma in an unmonitored setting or in the absence of resuscitative equipment
  • Known or suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, including paralytic ileus
  • Hypersensitivity to hydrocodone, chlorpheniramine, or any of the inactive ingredients

Dosing Recommendations

General Guidance

Do not increase the dose or dosing frequency. Prescribe for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.

Cough and upper respiratory symptoms

Adult Dose

5 mL every 12 hours as needed, not to exceed 2 doses in 24 hours

Pediatric Dose

Not indicated for pediatric patients under 18 years of age

Special Population Considerations

Pregnancy

  • Not recommended for use in pregnant women
  • Prolonged use of opioids during pregnancy may cause neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome

Nursing Mothers

  • Chlorpheniramine and its metabolites are excreted into human breast milk
  • Caution should be exercised when Hydrocodone Polistirex and Chlorpheniramine Polistirex is administered to a nursing woman

Pediatric Use

  • Not indicated for use in patients younger than 18 years of age
  • Life-threatening respiratory depression and death have occurred in children who received hydrocodone

Geriatric Use

  • Use caution when considering the use of Hydrocodone Polistirex and Chlorpheniramine Polistirex in patients 65 years of age or older
  • Elderly patients may have increased sensitivity to hydrocodone; greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function; or concomitant disease or other drug therapy
