Lamotrigine is an antiepileptic drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It is used as adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and generalized seizures of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients aged 2 years and older. Lamotrigine is also used for the maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder to delay the time to occurrence of mood episodes. The drug has a boxed warning for serious skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can be life-threatening. Important safety information includes the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and contraindications include hypersensitivity to the drug or its ingredients.
