Piroxicam

Warning

Increased risk of serious cardiovascular and gastrointestinal events

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to piroxicam or any components of the drug product
• History of asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
• In the setting of coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Adverse Reactions

• Nausea
• Constipation
• Flatulence
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Edema
• Rash

General Guidance

Dose adjustments may be necessary in certain populations, such as the elderly or those with renal impairment

Pregnancy

• Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
• Avoid use in pregnant women starting at 30 weeks of gestation

Nursing Mothers

• Piroxicam is excreted in human milk
• Use with caution in nursing mothers

Pediatric Use

• Piroxicam has not been investigated in pediatric patients
• The safety and effectiveness of piroxicam have not been established

Geriatric Use

• Elderly patients are at greater risk for NSAID-associated serious cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and/or renal adverse reactions
• Start dosing at the low end of the dosing range and monitor patients for adverse effects
